Michaël Borremans

Canadian artist Stan Douglas is fascinated by the phenomenon of time. Douglas utilise the medium of film and video because of their ability to ultimately address the matter of time. He researches and produces film and video projects that draw on the past and present together to illuminate those moments in which progress is redirected, subverted, or arrested. While parts of the narrative of the films take place in the past, others occur in the present. Moreover, Douglas aims to disturb the regularity and linearity of the viewer’s own time. Because one experiences two times at the same time, the onlooker does not know where to locate himself. One is subjected to be lost in time, which enhance a melancholic and uncanny atmosphere.
The photos by Douglas represent deserted landscapes. Although they are preliminary studies of a site where a film will be shot, the photos are autonomous artworks with an inherent dialogue. The photos reveal a contrast between nature and culture. It is the dialectic notion, simultaneously capturing two different things, that intrigues the artist.

Douglas has been featured in numerous one-person exhibition: at the Jeu de Paume, Paris (1991); Musé Nationale d'Art Moderne (Centre Georges Pompidou), Paris (1994); Institute of Contemporary Art, London (1994); the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (1994); the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (1995); and the Musé d'Art Contemporain, Montreal (1996), among others. His work was represented at Documenta 9, 10 and 11. He had a solo-exhibition in 2003 at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover, Germany. The last 3 years he had solo exhibitions at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, NE (US), Art Gallery of York University in Toronto (CN), the Studio Museum in Harlem New York (US) and galleries accross the world. In 2007 his work was included in a show at Centre George Pompidou, Paris (FR) and a solo exhibition opened at at Württembergische Kunstverein and Stuttgart Staatsgalerie in Germany.
